About the Artist

  • My work explores connection, belonging, and the ways individuals seek understanding across differences. Drawing upon Japanese aesthetics and sensibilities, I create paintings inhabited by anthropomorphic animals and plants that serve as reflections of human society and of ourselves.

    Experiences of both exclusion and acceptance have shaped my interest in how people form relationships, navigate differences, and find common ground. Through travel and living between cultures, I became increasingly aware that meaningful connections can emerge despite differences in language, background, or perspective. These experiences continue to inform my artistic practice.

    The characters that populate my work embody a range of emotions, identities, and relationships. Through their interactions, I explore themes of empathy, coexistence, vulnerability, and the universal desire to belong. While each figure maintains its individuality, they exist within interconnected environments that reflect the complex ways people influence and support one another.

    At the heart of my practice is a belief that every person possesses inherent value and deserves to feel seen, understood, and accepted. Through my work, I invite viewers to reflect on their own experiences of connection and belonging, and to consider how our differences can enrich, rather than divide, our shared human experience.

  • Haruko Mori is a Japanese contemporary artist based in Seattle, Washington.

    Working primarily in painting, Haruko explores themes of connection, belonging, and coexistence through imaginative worlds inhabited by anthropomorphic animals, plants, and symbolic figures. Drawing inspiration from Japanese visual traditions such as Rinpa, Ukiyo-e, and Kachō-ga (bird-and-flower painting), alongside Western art history, she creates narrative-driven works that examine empathy, identity, and the relationships that shape human experience.

    Influenced by her experiences living between cultures, Haruko is interested in the human capacity to find common ground across diverse backgrounds, perspectives, and identities. Through vibrant color, decorative compositions, and fictional characters, her work reflects on empathy, vulnerability, and the universal desire to feel seen and understood.

    By transforming elements of the natural world into symbolic protagonists, Haruko invites viewers to consider their own experiences of identity, connection, and belonging. Her paintings celebrate both our shared humanity and the unique qualities that shape each individual.

    Her work has been exhibited in Japan, Germany, and the United States, and has been featured in publications including Juxtapoz Magazine and Supersonic Art. Her paintings are held in private collections internationally.
